Jim Wright's 'New Yesterdays' is a great read for YAs or for anyone that would like to be a YA again. This time-travel/coming of age novel combines historical research with the rattling good yarn of a boy who discovers a mysterious portal in a 'haunted' house. Written with charm through the eyes of a child, Mr Wright's first novel is a delight from beginning to end. Roll on the next book!

I have rewrote my original review as not to be too much of a spoiler. I truly love the imagination of the writer, Jim Wright! His love for history, local folklore and family shine through in his words. The story is refreshing and different from all the paranormal fiction books that are out there today. *small spoiler*……… I'm proud of the Native American heritage I have from my mother's side of the family & have often wondered how different life would've been for them if certain horrible acts on behalf of our government had not happened. This story gives me insight to how things COULD have been if one curious boy had had an actual portal to travel back in time and chose to change history, leaving behind his loved ones forever in order to do so. How refreshing to read a story of such a selfless act of a young boy with pure love for his 'adopted' family & respect for the hard decisions he made for the betterment of mankind!! I'm from the area in which this book was based on, through his flawless depiction, I could picture it all with impeccable clarity. Thank you, Jim Wright for penning such a beautiful tale!!! I highly recommend this book for anyone of all ages!! My ten year old will be adding this one to his reading list and I'm going to suggest it to the local schools as an addition to their libraries as well.

There's something about a well-written late childhood, young adult novel that I find particularly appealing, but when its theme is time travel, and the history has a truly authentic feel to it, my interest thermometer shatters the mercury ceiling! Please don't let this slip through your fingers. And if you have a kid in school, bring this to the attention of his teacher. I find the subject matter and treatment relevant up through high school the same way that Tom Sawyer is great reading for all age groups. If a sequel is in the works, the author can count on my standing in line for my autographed copy.
